The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
